Care for your Outdoor Fire Pit

Here are a few tips that would help you to take care of your fire pit.

  • Remember, the first thing to increase longetivity of any product is cleanliness. Immaterial of the type of fire pit that you use, it should be always kept clean. Wooden fire pits, produce ash, and this should be removed as soon as it cools.
  • Never put out a fire, unless the remains have completely cooled down. Also never put out a fire with water, this could damage your fire pit, especially if it’s a clay fire pit. The sudden change in temperature causes the fire pit to break.
  • Never use accelerants or combustibles to start a fire. These can be very dangerous.
  • You can protect the surface of your outdoor fire pit with sealants
  • When lighting a fire through a fire pit, keep combustible materials like plastic bottles at a safe distance. They melt from the heat and the mess that’s left out becomes very difficult to clean
  • Make sure to light a fire pit, on a solid and strong surface that’s non combustible.
  • If you are using a gas fire pit, make sure to check and clean the burners and valves regularly. Insect nests and dirt build up can block the flow of gas, thus causing fire. These can be cleaned easily by using a household detergent.
  • Although, cleaning a fire pit is easy, it’s always advised to have these inspected regularly by professionals. If you are using a gas fire pit, you can get this checked by a qualified service man. Your gas supplier could be contacted in this respect.
  • If you do not plan to use it for a long period, you can store these in a safe place and cover it with a fire pit cover, so that they do not suffer the vagaries of weather.
  • If you have used your fire pit for cooking, make sure, to clean it after use, because the juice from the food, drips on the fire and often causes it to stick to the surface of the fire pit.
  • If you have a cast iron fire pit, or a fire pit that’s prone to rust , make sure to keep it rust free  by oiling it regularly.
  • Needless to say, never leave a fire pit unattended unless the fire has completely died and the fire pit completely cooled down.
