The internet is a wonderful place for information. If you’re looking to build a fire pit, there are lots of resources to look at. I found this step-by-step guide on how to build a stone fire pit in just a day. Here it goes:
Step 1. Prepare the materials you will need
Before you start building your new stone fire pit you will need to prepare all the needed materials and elements:
- About 100 retaining wall landscaping blocks, 12 inches wide, 4 inches high and 8 inches deep. Make sure they’re good quality.
- Steel pit ring with tabs and metal grate. You can buy these from a specialized garden store or find them online.
- About half ton sand and gravel.
Step 2. Start Building
First we dug a hole. The hole was about 2 feet wider than the fire pit itself, then filled the bottom with gravel. Dig about a foot of soil out, then fill it with 4 inches of gravel and then 4 inches of sand on top of that. After that you should stack the first, basic ring of blocks, make sure they are leveled, and then fill the outside area of the blocks with gravel for a stronger base.
Step 3. Stack additional layers of stones
Before placing another layer of stones you should clean the previous one from any debris on it. In every course leave three or four random gaps to allow the air to get to the fire.
Step 4. Place the steel pit ring and stack the last layer
The steel ring should be placed in the center of the pit, and you’re ready to rock!
