I work for a parks and recreational program year round. One of the complaints that we heard several times over the last few years has been in regards to the new fire pits. Although people enjoy the fire pits more so than the outdoor grills that they replaced, people were concerned that fires were not being fully put out. If a child or a dog happened to wander away from supervision, there was a really danger that they might start playing with a fire pit.
At a staff meeting we discussed this concern and certainly knew we needed to do something about it. We finally came to the conclusion that the best thing would be to purchase fire pit covers. Since all of the pits were the same size, we knew that we could purchase the same type of covers.
I offered to go to the store and purchase the fire pit covers. I went to the same place where we bought the pits and a sales clerk showed me what they had in stock in regards to covers. I was surprised that there were different types of covers as well as an assortment of colors. I choose to go with a metal dome shape cover and opted to stick with one color. I chose a light brown color. On each one of the covers I used a permanent marker and wrote, “Cover must be kept on fire pit unless pit is being used and has adult supervision.” We received a lot of positive feedback regarding the fire pit covers and we were happy that we were able to find a solution.
