Little Blue Bird

There’s this little bird that comes around my backyard. He always visits in the late summer.

When I am sitting out back by the fire, he comes ever so close. I sit still so he isn’t afraid. I don’t make a sound. I just watch as he dances about. He pecks at the bread crumbs I have sprinkled about for him.

If only I could be as carefree and happy as he is. He doesn’t seem to have a care in the world. He just hops about in the flicker of the fire. I think he comes because of the warmth; because I don’t bother him; because I offer him food.

I think he likes me. Every once in a while he will look up at me. I think he wants me to watch him. I smile, but I don’t make a sound. I know he would run if I moved or if I talked. He’d be gone in a minute.
